J. DAVISWe purchased the Humminbird because of our familiarity with a down imaging version we own on another boat. We knew there wou;d be a learning curve when side imaging is added. Believe me, there is a learning curve. It is not usable out of the box. It has to be programmed. The install instructions are pretty straight forward, programming, not so much. The provided DVD is more sales pitch than a useful set-up guide. The user manual is your bible. Read/reread until you understand how each function is programmed and then how to get it on screen. Yes
Robert GundersonScreen clarity is excellent. The new base map that is downloadable on the Humminbird web site is fantastic. This is all new technology for me and the operational guide is Ok, however I found that some of the info about this unit on the Humminbird web site to be a more helpful. Would be great if Humminbird could and would make a operational video in more detail on how to use some of the settings.Yes
Chris B.The Downscan can display holes, weeds, drop offs, and bars with various sized symbols of fish showing where they are hanging out and at what depth..... and where flat areas are that dont' attract fish... the side scanning adds a hundred and fifty dollars to the price and isn't really worth it unless you have a lot of money....so just get the DI/GPS G2 version.... the built in maps and GPS are good enough for my trips in the Florida Keys where I need to know how shallow its getting and how far from an Island I am.... that makes going out to a particular reef much safer as I loop around and avoid rocky areas of shallows because I can see on the map exactly where I am and fairly good details about the depths.. I bought the SI version and it might someday be worth it to me if I figure out how to "see" the obstructions and topography from the side. Interpreting the Downscanning with fish symbols is simple and easy.... the side scanning is not so easy. It also has basic maps of lakes in the U.S. though not with depths or details... for that you have to buy a SD Card with details of lakes such as the "Lakes in Minnesota". $150, but there is a $50 rebate right now.Yes

Michael ReevesExcellent unit. SIMPLE to install and setup. Love the split screen GPS map and Depth finder. Keeps track of the bottom even at 40 mph.Yes
Greg HallPretty easy install on a pontoon, had to get a transducer extension cord. Does have a great Down image picture. The GPS is the best internal, have used the three major brands. An external is better, but as far as internals Garmin is best. Screen has good visibility. You do have to spend a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the menus and setups but once you get it, it’s easy. Love the quick connect base with the wires secured and head unit is removable.Yes
T.P.Love the unit so far. I got this for dual purposes, I sold my Vexilar FL-20 and got this to replace it on the ice and to use on my kayak in the summer. Already had the portable kit from the Striker 4 so I mounted the echoMap 53cv in there along with the GT8HW-IF ice fishing transducer. I put a 10ah SLA battery in the kit and the unit ran 7 hrs with plenty of power to spare at the end of the day, I had the brightness turned down to about 70 percent. Tested the graph mode with A-Scope and the flasher mode, both worked great but I prefer the graph mode. It shows the live view and history so you can see movement in the lines and how fish reacted to presentation, as well as zooming in to the bottom 4 ft and up in 1 ft increments. The built in lake maps and GPS sealed the deal for me and was the selling point to upgrade from my Vexilar. I also had a Marcum LX-6 and I would say it's like a Marcum on steroids, with the GPS and lake maps. Looking forward to using this on open water in my kayak. Extremely satisfied with my purchase.

Katherine W.I really like the Deeper with the Flexible Arm for my kayak. I have only used it twice, but I am happy to finally see fish arcs. It seems acurate and reliable for depth and water tempurature. Would reccommend for any entry level kayak fishing with this product. NOTE: use it sparingly, it does run out of battery power for your phone and the device rather quickly.Yes
DWBUsed the Deeper Pro ice fishing next to my buddy who was using a Vexilar flasher. Holes were about 4 feet apart in the ice house. Got some interference from the Vexilar transducer but not bad, the Deeper Pro still worked fine. In ice fishing mode, the Deeper Pro worked at least as well as the Vexilar and looked cleaner. Saw fish coming in on the Deeper Pro that never showed up on the Vexilar. Cool feature is the recording option. Nice to be able to look back to see what happened. Battery ran continuously for 4.5 hours and was still at 38%. My phone didn’t last that long - I has a small cell phone battery pack with me, so not a problem (highly recommended). Overall, a very cool product. A fraction of the size of the sensor, much less space in the ice house and much easier to use than the Vexliar.Yes
SEFExcellent Customer Service. I purchased the unit and used it one time and it worked fantastic. I was very pleased with its performance through the ice. It gave similar readings to a Vexlar unit in the hole next to mine.Yes

mobile sniperperfect size for being mounted on my kayak for fishing. works great and is VERY low battery draw. I have ran it for 38 hours continuous and it only dropped the voltage .6 volts. It's not let me down and i'm very happy with buying it.Yes
coopaloopI doubt that anyone reading this review hasn't either owned, or doesn't already currently own a modern depth sounder/fish-finder like this one. This Lowrance unit was purchased to strictly read the bottom in 20' or less, on a 16' aluminum boat I just rehabbed. The Lowrawnce unit is a breeze to install, has a clear, bright, screen and works at plenty high speeds. This is not designed for 100's of feet of water. Other more powerful units are made for that.Yes
Ivie J.I bought this because my dad was wanting a fish finder. It's everything he was looking for and the price was perfect. He's super happy about his birthday present!Yes

simpletobelieveI do like this finder. It worked very well on it's maiden launch on my kayak. I paired it with the 141 transducer mounting arm track mount. I used a Outdoor Products Watertight Box to mount the 12V 7AH Sealed Lead Acid (SLA) Battery for Piranha MAX 160 Fish Finder inside with watertight switch. It was very clear display with good contrast. I like it's size and not in the way while paddling or fishing. The you can raise it up when landing/launching.Yes
KENused this on a trip to canada, and was super happy with it. To not only have a fish finder to give you the correct depths, but to incorporate the GPS was great. It was super useful on unfamiliar water, because if you pay attention the 1st time you can follow your path to get home safely. Also, we used it to mark fish that we caught, and was able to use the split screen to pin point those spots and see depths. Pretty cool for this price point.Yes
Jason NewtonFast shipping. It has a lot of features for such a small price including heading, bearing to waypoint, water temp, gps speed in statute miles or knots, distance to waypoint, eta to waypoint, current time, and ofcourse depth. I cannot speak as to the accuracy of finding fish as I use it solely for depth and navigation. I wish I had bought it a long time ago. One tip for anyone with a fiberglass hull: Bury the transducer in silicone at the bottom of your hull and avoid drilling holes in your boat. It is a cinch to install.Yes

Jd JohnsonI purchased and installed this on a twenty year old, 25' sailboat (Com-Pac 25) to replace the failed analog depth sounder. I use the fish finder as a depth sounder with the Navoinic app on my 10" Android pad. I did install a 12v plug to power the pad and have a mounting bracket for the pad on the helm, but I only need that if I am sailing for more than a couple of hours. The fish finder is hardwired to a 12v switch on the boat and the sending unit is epoxied to the hull below the v-berth in the bow. Installation was fairly easy, and I have been very satisfied with the performance of the product. One nice feature about this set up, is I can upgrade or change my navigation app or device and simply link to the wifi signal produced by the fish finder. I know replacing the analog depth sounder may have been less expensive, but this set up gives me digital depth sounder with GPS navagation on my android pad and is more 2015 technology, than 1995.Yes
Ryan Nap11Perfect fit in my 17 Boston Whaler. Pair this with a 7" Nexus tablet for under $200, add Navionics, and you have an amazing chart plotter/Sounder combo for under $400. Can't beat it. The sonar charts feature is awesome, and the sonar itself works quite well. I hold bottom when running 25 kts, and the detail is impressive for such a compact unit.
Yes
John dI absolutely love this device. You mount the traditional transducer on your boat below the water line, you plug it into power in and it offers it's own Wi-Fi signal. You can use it with tablets phones anything that attaches the Wi-Fi and can download the free app. Very responsive. Does not work over 10 miles an hour though, but if you're trolling very effective.Yes

Lind FarleyThe down and side scan is better than the hds 8 gen 2 that I linked it to (both are on console). The only complain that I have is that you have to put everything thru the hds 8 and use an Ethernet cable to the hds 9 gen 2 from the structure scan box to get everything to work as designed I had problem after problem trying to go directly from the hds 9 to the hds 8. If this would have been made clear in the instructions it would have been a lot simpler to get everything to work. I found this wiring on Dr. sonar, if anyone else has this problem. After getting all this resolved I love the unit.Yes

Amazon CustomerI really like this unit. Highly visible, easy to use. As of today, I have run this unit for 6 months. I bought the Navionics chart for it and love it. I also own a Humminbird 798cSIHD on a second boat, the 798 is a much smaller but much more expensive unit, because of the side sonar. I like the side sonar, but it isn't worth the money, I am just as happy with the 2d unit, glad I didn't opt for that feature. Plus, both can use the chart card!Yes
michael m volenbergLove it . easy to install . Bright screen even in direct sunlight .Yes

Best Fish Finder Buying Guide

Fish finders are very useful tools. Not only do these devices guide users to where the fish are hiding, but now users are also able to see very clearly what their targets look like underneath. Most fish finders nowadays work well in very deep and dark waters.

In buying the best fish finder, remember that not all devices are built with quality. It is important to buy one that is durable and can withstand different water temperatures and environment.

Another good aspect to consider is how you intend to use the device. Will you use it in freshwater, saltwater, or for ice fishing? In terms of screen size, will you be content with a small screen or do you want a bigger screen with sharper resolutions?

Some devices have Auto-Chart features but they are a bit pricier, so consider also your budget. Lastly, look closely at the transducer of the device and select one that gives high-frequency.
